Following the traces of landmines and clearing them are an important part of Masam’s mission in its long journey to make Yemen free of them. The operations to demolish the cleared landmines remain a very important issue for this great humanitarian project in Yemen.
Demolishing landmines in a secure and professional way will protect Yemenis forever from the deadly traps and terror buried underground, because just clearing the landmines is not enough, as some people may find them and replant them. This is why Masam is working tirelessly to clear them then to demolish them to guarantee a definite riddance of this evil.
Project Masam, carried out lately an operation in the western coast to destroy and demolish 740 landmines, unexploded ordnance and IEDs.
In an exclusive interview with Masam’s media office, the international expert in project Masam Dr. Zauba Alrawi reiterated that the demolition operation led by the team specialized in collection in the region of Bab Al Mandab included 376 anti-armor landmines, 150 fuses and capsules, 53 anti-personnel landmines, in addition to 143 unexploded shells an 18 rockets.
Alrawi confirmed that Masam’s goal in its continuous demolition and destruction operations is to get Yemenis out of harm’s way indefinitely in the future, and to guarantee that landmines won’t be used again to terrorize civilians and hamper their lives.
Dr. Alrawi said that Masam is the only project in Yemen that bears the responsibility of protecting civilians from the calamity of landmines which are planted at random and extensively in Yemen. He added: “Masam proved in the past period its merit in clearing landmines and demolishing them, because the project’s management believes in the right of Yemenis to live a peaceful life”.
On this basis, Masam continues its hard work on the ground to return life back to normal in Yemen, with a keenness on wiping all the possibilities that these landmines may be used again to keep Yemenis in a constant state of terror and fear.
