Not all the hearts can bear the pains of life, or bury their sorrows in oblivion and heal themselves, especially if we talk about the hearts of kids who have no experience in life.
Can you imagine a kid who fell victim to a treacherous landmine? We are talking here about the 13 year old Nasser Mohammad. Nasser carries cuts that cover his weak little body and deep wounds inside his heart. He told his story with tears in his eyes.
One day, Nasser Mohammad went out to play with his friends. His childish steps were leading him to run, jump and have fun. His energy was extraordinary and he had to let it go, enjoying his childhood.
So Nasser let his childhood guide him. He played, had fun, laughed and joked with his friends, until the last beautiful image that still remains in his memory, before the earth shook under him and everything went dark.
At that moment, a landmine exploded at him. Its shrapnel flew to devour Nasser’s little body and took his eye out. He woke up after the accident with only one eye.
Nasser, until now, can’t grasp the meaning of losing his eye. He always wonders: what did he do to deserve such a fate? His heart aches whenever he thinks that he can no longer study or play as he used to do, and that watching the world with one eye is a misery for a boy like him who doesn’t understand life.
Today, tears are choking the throat of Nasser. He sees the abrupt horrible change that occurred to him, the difficulty of living with just one eye, the pain of being unable to play or study with his friends, as his daily activities have become dreams that are difficult to realize. Whenever he believes that he can’t fulfill his dreams, his pain and sorrow grow bigger. Nasser hides his face with his hands, to try to stop his flowing tears. His broken heart can’t convince his eyes to stop shedding tears. The international community should feel ashamed of Nasser’s tears, as it failed him and his countrymen in their ordeal with the landmines. A failure that sentenced Nasser and the other Yemeni civilians to live under the mercy of the deadly traps which harm them indiscriminately in the afflicted Yemen.
