The suffering of the Yemenis will not end by kicking the Houthis out of the lands. The legacy they have buried under the ground will remain a barrier to achieve security there, as this sorrow will remain on their chests, killing the sons of this poor country for decades.
The Houthis managed to sneak into the life of the Yemenis with all malice and deception through planting death, which will remain like a sword on their necks.
In order to shed light on this scourge, the Yemeni Embassy in Washington held a panel discussion at the US Congress on the landmine disaster in Yemen, which is being used by coup militias randomly to spread terror, intimidate the citizens and punish those who rejected their presence and arrogance.
Ambassador Ahmed bin Mubarak referred to the humanitarian impact of these landmines and their impact on the society, especially women and children who are most at risk because of the Houthis’ methods of planting and camouflage, pointing out that the insistence of these rebels on using this weapon, that is prohibited by international treaties ratified by Yemen, this is a confirmation of their brutality and the desire to tighten their grip on power, even if the price is taking the lives of civilians and shedding blood.
He also pointed out that the international reports had shown accurately that the techniques of manufacturing landmines and the materials and pieces involved in their installation are of Iranian manufacture, “This is the gift of the Iranian regime to our people, and this is their contribution to the development of our country by cutting off children’s limbs, distorting women and youth, and killing elderly people,” Bin Mubarak said
During the event, statistics and reports were reviewed by the United Nations, the Department of Defense, Human Rights Watch, MSF, and mine-impact study organizations, including the number of victims and the number of landmines planted by the Houthis and the areas in which they are located.
The reports also revealed that landmines not only target civilian lives, but also their sources of livelihood by planting them on farms, water sources, livestock grazing and schools in flagrant targeting of civilians to intimidate and kill them, especially in Taizz governorate where most incidents and victims are concentrated.
The symposium focused on the efforts of project Masam to save Yemeni lives from danger, where 32 teams are working to achieve this goal. The participants also reviewed the efforts of the Yemeni Executive Center to deal with landmines, which, in addition to removing the seeds of death, It is keen to raise awareness about the negative and destructive effects, where the number of participants in the training campaigns and awareness of 36 thousand individuals.
At the end of the event, the participants issued a statement calling on the international community and specialized organizations to give greater attention to this issue and to do more to prevent the use of landmines and to assist for the care of victims, whether through medical treatment, psychotherapy or rehabilitation.
