Between the explosions of landmines there is a story of a de-miner who lost his life, or a kid who was playing close to the deadly traps, or a man who was heading to work in his farm. These horrible accidents tell the story of the coup against legitimacy that took place six Years ago.
The truth to be told, is that thousands of civilians in Yemen are still paying a heavy price because of the Houthi ambition to rule Yemen which led to killing hundreds of innocents.
The artificial limbs in the victims’ bodies are an evidence of the horrible crimes committed by the Houthis. Yemen has become the most affected country with landmines in the world; they are in every city or province where these militias set their feet. These zealots with all the hatred, cunning, grudge and monstrosity they have in their hearts work to create a reality that goes against what Yemenis want. The Houthis want to erase the identity of Yemen and its future generations, to falsify history and destroy thousands of years of Yemeni civilization, in addition to pushing the Yemeni society to the brink of collapse, poverty and suffering.
Landmines have always been a major tool used by these militias in their criminal plan. They planted more than one million of them in Yemen.
Can you imagine how many lives will be lost, and how many people will lose their limbs due to the Houthi landmines? In addition to the outrageous number of deadly traps that will remain underground, a part of the Yemenis people will be handicapped, thus adding a burden on the society. Landmines will create generations of people who will be always in need of help and isolated. In addition to that, the huge number of landmines makes clearing them a very daunting task.
Despite the efforts made by the landmine clearing teams, led by project Masam, and which achieved huge success in that regard, the threat of these landmines remains due to their numbers, forms, kinds and distribution in vast areas in Yemen at random and without maps.
The daily journeys of Masam’s teams are a very delicate walk between life and death, but the project is still committed to get Yemen out of the marsh of explosives made by the Houthi criminals. Project Masam was able since its launch until the 21st of August to clear 180955 landmines, unexploded ordnance and explosive devices, in addition to clearing more than 13 million square meters of Yemeni lands over the same period.
This is a message of hope to Yemenis, that they can believe in a bright new dawn, when they will be able to live a normal life.
Masam’s teams are waging a ferocious battle against landmines, with perseverance and a strong belief in prevailing over this hidden enemy and the militias that planted it, because the will of life always triumphs over the instinct of death.
