Jamila Qasim, a mother of daughters, was out herding sheep when she walked on a landmine.

This incident changed her life forever. Her lower limbs were amputated and Jamila now. This is her story, as told to Project Masam.

“I went out to herd the sheep. I was walking and stepped on one of the mines with my left foot and it exploded immediately.

“Another mine flew in the air without exploding, then suddenly I felt a strong flame surrounding my body, and until now my body is still suffering.

“I used to walk a lot without feeling tired, but now I am not even comfortable while I am sitting. Mines affected me a lot, now I feel that I lack everything.

“When I walked, I walked with my head held high and never got tired. Now I can only move with the help of my husband or my daughters. Now there is no comfort even in sitting. Now I am dead while I am alive.

“Mines did not spare anyone, neither young nor old, nor anyone else, unless they are lying dead. Let them go to war in the mountains and hills away from men, women, and children; but they do not fight the military, rather they are fighting people inside their homes. Please God, Grant me patience.”
