Fathia Salah took risks to go in search of firewood to keep her family warm.
Over the course of two months, Fathia would provide bundles of firewood until the day Fathia was stopped in her steps.
While Fathia was about to lift a bundle of firewood on her back, the ground shook under her feet. She had walked on a landmines.
As a result of this accident, Fathia lost her leg and was amputated.
Fathia told Project Masam she was deeply saddened by her husband’s despair for what had happened to her, which she said deepened her grief and desire to isolate herself from people.
She spent month alone in her house, on her praying mat, she explained.
Though she is still struggling to come to terms with the incident, Fathia is showing great composure now, and said she keeps praying for Project Masam to continue its landmine clearance work in Yemen to protect others from deadly mines.
