The Managing Director of project Masam for Mine Clearance in Yemen Mr. Ousama Algosaibi said that the project was able to clear and demolish more than 179 thousand landmines, IEDs and unexploded ordnance, reiterating that 90% of them were landmines made or modified locally, or landmines imported from Iran.
Algosaibi noted in an interview with “26 September” that the militias planted explosives camouflaged as rocks or kids’ toys etc.. indicating that the project was able to clear more than 5033 of these devices, and that Masam’s teams are still conducting their mission continuously.
Algosaibi added: “As much as we care about securing and clearing the largest size of mined areas, the Houthi militias, in return, continue planting landmines in the regions that are under their control”.
Algosaibi indicated that the members of the project’s clearing teams are all Yemenis who were trained and qualified by the project’s experts, and that they were provided with the most advanced technology and technical devices in Mine Clearance, which enabled the displaced to overcome all the innovated landmines used by the Houthis.
He noted that the teams secured and cleared more than 12 million square meters of Yemeni lands, mostly vital areas that include villages, residential areas, agricultural lands, sub-roads and highways, adding that “With securing these regions we helped thousands of displaced to return safely to their homes, farms and schools”.
He indicated that project Masam lost up to now in the battle against the vicious Houthi landmines 21 martyrs, including 5 foreign experts, and 16 wounded; some of them were permanently handicapped.
