Yemenis pain caused by mines and their suffering with them are countless, so what this explosive death traps did to our brothers in those lands was horrible. Hearts and consciences crumble for, and the sincere voice of humanity screams out of its core, tearing apart all the causes of lethargy and ignorance towards this purely human cause.
Tragic stories highlighted the heinous mine crimes, which affected individuals and families, among them the story of Citizen Muhammad Mahmoud Nasser Akish’s Family, from the Hays directorate in Hudaydah governorate. This family was displaced from the Dennin region of Hais, after the Houthis forced them to leave.
After entering Al-Dinen, the Houthis forced the people to leave their homes so that their fighters could take shelter in civilian homes, As narrated by the head of the family.
The head of the family, Muhammad Akish, explained the following: “I forcibly left the house with my family of 12 people, including 8 children, on a medium-sized carriage to the center of Hays directorate, and on the displacement road, a Houthi mine exploded, killing my mother in law, and my wife Aisha was subjected to a movement obstruction that left her with half a body and My child, Murad, 7 years old, has a disability that made him speechless and paralyzed his movement, while the rest of the family suffered several injuries, ranging from medium to light”.
Akish’s family is not the only one affected by mines. The story of the child Iman is also heartbreaking, and her affliction summarizes the tragedy of thousands of Yemeni victims , Where her features recount the painful life details that are repeated in the diaries of death and loss in the Yemeni streets that is permissible with mines. In her innocent, spontaneous phrases, she said, “While I was leaving our house in the morning, a Houthi mine exploded on me, only to find myself on a hospital bed, and I lost my hand and the mine fragments filled my body”.
Also the story of Ahmed Garry expresses, a dramatic case par excellence of a father of ten children, where explosive death traps transformed him from a father who supports his family to a dependent on them, so he start relying on some of his children to walk some steps after he was a generous supporter to them, He is in this state of helplessness and need for two years waiting for God’s help, and the sympathy of merciful hearts.
The condition of the Yemeni Musaad Naji is not considered better than that of Ahmed, because mines have made him lose his health and his beloveds at the same time, as he lost his body strength and some of his family and livestock, and he began to see life as a mass of evils and tragedies.
In front of these painful tragedies, Project Masam sought to protect the Yemenis from their plight with mines, through field clearance and destruction activities along with awareness campaigns for people to reduce the number of mine victims.
Masam teams awareness campaigns on the dangers of mines were responsive to people, they were keen to take into consideration the causes of knowledge and means of prevention, as evidenced by field reports regarding the presence of mines in different areas of Yemen.
Perhaps one of the first things in this humanitarian awareness, Team 24 Masam, along with team of experts, honored the child Habib Ali, from the Dhabab area, for informing the engineering team of the existence of a landmine without tampering with it or trying to recover it, an act that proved the success of Masam teams in the awareness of local residents about the danger of mines and avoid tampering with them, and inform engineering teams of any foreign objects found.
The Managing Director of Project Masam, Mr. Ousama AlGosaibi, announced that since the project launch until October 16, Masam teams had cleared 192 thousand mines, unexploded ordnance and an explosive device.
Which are promising steps on the approach of defeating explosive death traps that have never known mercy, and have not dealt with their mistakes and crimes except with more heinous crimes and mistakes.
