Amid the thorny deadly fields, Masam’s clearing teams have been working during the past two year to secure hundreds of areas, villages and residential areas, and have been able to bring back 90% of the local population safely to their regions and farms.
In an exclusive interview with Masam’s media office, the leader of team 21 Masam Engineer Mohammad Sha’fal reiterated that his team was able to clear and destroy more than 1700 landmines, 450 IEDs and unexploded ordnance from 21 mined fields and areas during the past period in Al Mocha directorate, noting that his team moved two months ago to work in new areas in Muazza’a directorate after it finished its mission successfully in Al Mocha directorate.
Sha’fal said that the members of his team which is made of 7 clearers and a skillful medical attaché have a long experience in dealing with landmines that extends between 10 and 20 years.
Sha’fal indicated that project Masam played the main and most effective role in developing the clearers’ skills and strengthening their experiences, and due to the most advanced devices provided by Masam the team was able to make big and tangible achievements.
And about the nature of the field where team 21 is working now to clear, Engineer Sha’fal asserted that it is situated in Muazza’a directorate, and is one of the high impact fields due to its proximity to the residential areas, and many sub-roads that lead to the surrounding villages and residential areas pass through it. And in this field, project Masam lost the leader of the collecting team Engineer Ali Alkaldi, who was martyred in an anti-personnel landmine blast.
Sha’fal noted that his team was able to clear 90% of the field’s total size, and that the team cleared until now more than 50 landmines and 14 IEDs from the field, indicating that his team will continue its humanitarian mission to protect civilians from the danger of landmines.
