One of Project Masam’s teams has cleared 39 minefields in a heavily contaminated area of Yemen’s Shabwah province.
Engineer Ali Abdullah al-Rimi, Leader of Team 9, which operates in Osilan district, said that his team has so far cleared 39 minefields, including fields of anti-tank and anti-personnel landmines, and other fields planted almost exclusively with improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Al-Rimi said that these fields represented a real danger to many civilians, whose lives, homes, water resources, pastures, agricultural lands, schools have been greatly impacted by the presence of landmines.
The team leader also indicated that many of the internally displaced were able to return to their homes after clearance of these 39 fields. Shepherds returned to their pastures, schools and roads re-opened, and life returned to normal, Al-Rimi claimed.
The engineer said that his team had been working for three days in the As-Safra district in the Qarn al-Thaleeb minefield, which had been previously surveyed.
His team’s clearance work continues in the As-Safra area.
