Residents in the Bayhan district in Shabwah governorate have described their relief after Project Masam’s demining teams cleared flood watercourses of mines washed away by heavy rains from mine-contaminated areas to their farms and roads.

The district of Bayhan is western Yemen is still heavily contaminated by landmines planted extensively and indiscriminately by Houthi militias in the recent conflict. These mines continue to pose a great threat to the lives of civilians, especially during the rainy season which washes dozens of mines into populated areas in a phenomenon called landmine migration.

According to several civilians living in the area, Project Masam’s efforts contributed to protecting their lives, properties and livelihoods.

In a message, teacher Abdullah Salem Falah said: “We thank Project Masam for its great efforts in clearing flood watercourses of mines, and thus saving our lives and properties from imminent danger.”

In this context, Project Masam affirmed its commitment to continue its efforts to clear the Yemeni territory of mines, calling on all civilians to cooperate with demining teams and report any suspicious foreign objects, to keep them safe from this lethal scourge.
