On Monday, June 19, 2023, Project Masam welcomed Jose Dos Santos, the Director of Security at the United Nations Office in Marib, Yemen in its headquarters.

Dos Santos’ role and function is to ensure the safety of displaced Yemeni civilians in the resettlement areas, by ensuring that the areas in which they are resettled are free of explosive remnants of war such as landmines, and that these areas are not directly affected by the fighting fronts.

Dos Santos requested the assistance of Project Masam in providing education to his staff on the threats they may face in connection with landmines, improvised explosive devices and unexploded ordnance.

Project Masam told Dos Santos and his team that would assist the United Nations Office in Marib by providing mine risk education to educate its staff on the dangers they may face when visiting local communities in the region.

Taiz and Marib are some of the most landmine contaminated regions in Yemen, according to local human rights organisations.

Close cooperation between all parties to reach a common goal is crucial in Yemen, and for Project Masam, helping the UN office in this matter is just another way to save lives.

Mine Risk Education campaigns are carried out within the framework of several awareness activities implemented by Project Masam to increase the awareness of members of the public, and other bodies, of the dangers of landmines and highlight the humanitarian efforts provided by Project Masam’s demining teams in several Yemeni governorates.
