Project Masam’s deminers have destroyed 6,383 landmines, and unexploded ordnance in the Wadi Dufs area of Zinjibar in Abyan Governorate, east of Aden, Yemen’s de facto capital.

In alignment with the global mine action sector, Project Masam’s responsibilities include the clearance, removal or destruction of landmines stockpile and explosive remnants of war. By destroying the explosive items, Project Masam ensures they can no longer function as designed – this effectively protects civilian populations and helps to eradicate these deadly weapons.

On Thursday (28 August 2025) Project Masam’s Special Task Team (STT) in the Aden sector confirmed that the operation involved the detonation and destruction of:

  • 222 miscellaneous shells
  • 523 miscellaneous fuses
  • 5,551 assorted artillery rounds
  • 17 anti-personnel mines
  • Six anti-tank mines
  • 36 bombs of various types
  • 28 torpedoes

Engineer Munther Ahmed Qassem, leader of the STT 1, confirmed that the bulk demolition operation was conducted in a designated safe area, away from residential and agricultural zones, with full adherence to international safety standards despite the challenges on the ground.

“The Special Task Teams work year-round, given the critical importance of our tasks in protecting the lives of innocent civilians,” Qassem added.

Project Masam continues its humanitarian landmine clearance mission across several Yemeni governorates affected by mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and explosive remnants of war, clearing land and helping restore safety to local communities.
