Project Masam’s deminers have destroyed 2,439 landmines, and unexploded ordnance in the Wadi Dufs area of Zinjibar in Abyan Governorate, east of Aden, Yemen’s de facto capital.

In alignment with the global mine action sector, Project Masam’s responsibilities include the clearance, removal or destruction of landmines stockpile and explosive remnants of war.

By destroying the explosive items, Project Masam ensures they can no longer function as designed – this effectively protects civilian populations and helps to eradicate these deadly weapons.

Project Masam’s Special Task Team (STT) in the Aden sector confirmed that the operation involved the detonation and destruction of 182 unexploded shells, 324 miscellaneous fuses, five anti-tank mines, 11 banned anti-personnel mines, 1,764 assorted rounds, 110 armour-piercing fin stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS), 33 grenades, and 10 maritime weapons, underwater torpedoes.

This operation marks the second demolition mission carried out by the project during the holy month of Ramadan. The first operation took place on the 13th day of Ramadan and involved the destruction of 2,427 various remnants of war.

Engineer Munther Ahmed Qassem, leader of the STT, emphasised that the special task teams’ work continues year-round, underscoring the importance of removing risks that threaten the lives of innocent civilians.

“No task related to eliminating these dangers can be delayed,” he said. “Our team will continue its efforts throughout the remaining days of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr to ensure a safe, war-free environment.”

The operation was carried out in a safe location, far from populated areas and agricultural zones, in compliance with international standards for the safe disposal of mines and remnants of war. This demonstrates the project’s dedication to protecting civilians and safeguarding the environment.
