Landmines are a collective punishment imposed harshly by the hateful Houthis on Yemenis, because they dared to cling to their patriotism. But what kind of punishment? A bitter punishment that made the Yemenis’ lives full of disappointments, sufferings and tragedies.
The explosive death traps deprived Yemenis from living a normal life. They can’t move or work. They have no security, safety, ambition or stability. They can’t enjoy calm and live peacefully without fear.
The Houthis violated all these basic human rights by planting the landmines. And now, the Yemenis, have only one picture in their minds: just one step can lead to an explosion, then to death or paralysis.
This is the life of Yemenis under the specter of landmines. Hanging between death and a life that is open to horrendous possibilities of becoming paralyzed forever in a blink of the eye.
Between the Yemenis and normal life lie the landmines. These seeds of evil that bring only death and destruction. How can they live when they know that evil is lurking underground to harm them?
Landmines have turned the lives of Yemenis into nightmares. They have instilled fear and agony in their hearts. Just not trust the earth when you step on it is enough to turn into a hysterical person. And when you always think that one step may lead to a gruesome fate; either a certain death or a partial death by losing a limb or limbs from your body. Your life will be stalled forever, as you lose the job that you worked very hard to get, or your studies which would make a better future for you to serve your country.
This is what the landmines have done to Yemenis. Some of them are now in cemeteries, while many others are disabled, leaving always in a state of fear and anxiety because of the terror buried and lurking underground.
And despite these heavy physical and mental burdens on the shoulders of Yemenis, these great people never lost hope. They stood full of pride in spite of their bleeding wounds, until the arrival of a Godsend; Masam set its feet in Yemen and started clearing landmines and planting hope, securing the land and reassuring the Yemenis. Masam is crushing the landmines and propagating life. Step by step, life is returning to normal in many Yemeni regions after over two years of efforts made by Masam, this humanitarian project that saved Yemen and its inhabitants from 175 thousand landmines up to now. Masam’s march of generosity will continue until Yemen reaches the shores of safety. So congratulations to the Yemenis for their brave resistance, and for the presence of Masam; the beacon of hope amid the landmines pandemic.
