During his address during the United Nations Security Council Meeting on the situation in Yemen on 11 July 2022, H.E. Mohamed Abushahab, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Mission to the UN discussed Masam’s demining efforts in Yemen.

The high-level meeting came as Permanent Representatives called for an extension of the UN-brokered truce in Yemen – that has largely held in previous months although fighting was reported in a number of areas.

During the meeting, Mr Abushahab said the UAE “commend the KSRelief for removing nearly 350,000 explosive remnants of the war so far through the Masam project”.

“Such humanitarian efforts help save countless lives at a time when the Houthi militias are ignoring the safety of the population and causing immense destruction throughout the country.”

Council members welcomed “the reduction in violence thanks to the truce, yet voiced concern over the plight of civilians”.

Permanent Representatives added measures to protect civilians must be prioritized, including mine clearance and mine risk education.
