The Houthis are evils who committed a treason against Yemen. They were, unfortunately, born in this good country. Their fathers and forefathers were born here, but despite that they chose the path of treason.
The care not about a country or land or honor. They never complied with any treaty or truce. They care only about their interests. This is the truth about the Houthi militias who wrecked havoc in Yemen and destroyed the dreams of its people in order to seize power.
We can go back in history and check the many agreements these militias signed and violated. The massacres they made were only to serve an alien agenda at the sake of Yemenis. Reasonable people understand that the political initiatives won’t work with the Houthi militias who live in Yemen like a deadly virus.
The passage of time unveiled how these militias used agreements to intrude and try to impose their will. The Stockholm accord is a simple example about the crimes of these militias, as they mined the port of Al Hudaydah in western Yemen with various and long tunnel networks, in public streets and in residential areas; an act which confirms that the Houthis are not serious about finding a way solve the crisis, and that they just want to cling to power.
These militias didn’t stop at mining the public roads, they went farther by digging tunnels under the houses and residential areas to threaten the lives of Al Hudaydah’s inhabitants, knowing that using tunnels and mining them inside the cities are war crimes and crimes against humanity according to international law. Between the country’s interests and a sectarian ugly agenda, the Houthis chose the latter, to fulfill their desires and ambitions. And this is why they opened the doors of hell on Yemenis to force them to surrender.
The landmines and explosive devices were the Houthis’ main tools to terrorize civilians and harm them and deny them the right to go back to their homes and live a normal life, in addition to maim their bodies and take their lives away from them.
This was indicated in a human rights report published by the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations to Human Rights in Yemen, as it noted that 136 civilians were killed by anti-personnel landmines in a number of provinces during the period starting from the 1st of July 2019 to the 21st of July 2020. But these numbers remain inaccurate as the true ones are much higher.
It is impossible, according to the Houthi ideology, to reach an understanding for peace, because this means that they will not be the sole rulers of Yemen to implement their sectarian agenda on the people. Their agenda makes them plant the seeds of hatred all over the country. But fortunately, Masam’s teams entered the scene to protect Yemenis from the eerie landmines and their horrible explosions. Masam is working following an emergency plan to protect as many people as possible from the ordeal of landmines.
Project Masam is racing against the challenges of time and place. The project faces many difficulties, including the inability to get to all the regions of Yemen because of the continuous clashes, in addition to the vast mined areas and the lack of any documents that pinpoint their location. But despite that, Masam’s teams were able to clear 183581 landmines, unexploded ordnance and explosive devices since the launch of the project to the 4th of September.
This number is an achievement that revives hope and brings life back to many regions where silence and sorrows prevailed in the near past.
There are many lives that were saved, while others are awaiting for a chance to run away from the widely spread deadly devices, and the way is still long ahead despite the gigantic efforts that project Masam is making, and in which a number of its staff paid with their lives to carry out this humanitarian mission.
