Project Masam carried out a controlled demolition of large quantities of landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and unexploded ordnance in Ain District, Shabwah Governorate.
The bulk demolition operation was attended by Brigadier General Ameen Saleh Al-Aqili, Director of the Yemen Executive Mine Action Centre (YEMAC).
This operation marked the culmination of field efforts by Project Masam clearance teams working across Bayhan, Usaylan, and Ain districts in Shabwah Governorate, in addition to Harib District in Marib Governorate. These efforts are part of the project’s ongoing mission to clear liberated areas of landmines and explosive remnants of war and to restore safety for civilians.
In a statement to the Project Masam Media Office, Brigadier General Al-Aqili stated that his attendance at the demolition operation in Ain District reflects the scale and importance of the efforts carried out by Project Masam, which is funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in Shabwah Governorate and neighbouring districts. He explained that the destroyed items – including anti-vehicle mines, anti-personnel mines, and IEDs – had been planted by Houthi militias, which have caused widespread destruction across Yemen since 2015.
Brigadier General Al-Aqili further noted that Project Masam’s engineering teams continue to operate in all liberated governorates, including during the holy month of Ramadan. He explained that a joint operational plan was developed by the project and YEMAC to ensure the uninterrupted deployment of clearance teams throughout the month, alongside the assignment of emergency teams to respond swiftly to distress calls in mine-affected districts.
He concluded by expressing his appreciation for Project Masam and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their continued support of this vital humanitarian initiative, stressing that the Kingdom remains Yemen’s largest partner in the field of mine clearance.
