Project Masam emergency response teams, in coordination with the Mukalla branch of the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center (YEMAC), successfully destroyed 1,681 landmines and explosive remnants of war on Thursday (26 February), in Mukalla, in Yemen’s Hadhramaut Governorate.
In a statement, Project Masam’s media team reported that the destroyed items included a variety of munitions, including:
• Nine M79 guided missiles
• Five 122mm artillery shells
• 18 shells (85mm)
• 187 shells (30mm)
• 16 mortar shells (81mm)
• 98 mortar shells (60mm)
• 86 shells (40mm)
• 12 anti-personnel mines
• 12 mortar shells (82mm)
• 262 shells (23mm)
• three B-10 shells
• 28 RPG rounds
• 17 hand grenades
• 30 anti-tank mine fuses
• 107 Katyusha rocket fuses
• 791 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition.
The project explained that this operation represents the fifth demolition carried out in Mukalla since mid-January. It reaffirmed that Project Masam continues its humanitarian mission throughout the holy month of Ramadan, working to clear Yemeni territory of landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other explosive remnants of war that pose a threat to civilian lives.
Following this latest operation, the total number of mines, IEDs, and unexploded ordnance destroyed by Project Masam teams in Mukalla since January 17 has reached 11,487 explosive items.
