Project Masam’s deminers have destroyed 1,097 landmines, and unexploded ordnance in the Wadi Dufs area of Abyan Governorate, east of Aden, Yemen’s de facto capital.
The demolition operation, carried out by the Project Masam’s Special Task Team, involved the demolition of six anti-tank mines, 364 unexploded shells, 441 assorted fuses, two short-range anti-tank weapon systems (LAW), and 284 unexploded armour-piercing ammunition.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal expert Munther Qassem, leader of the Special Task Team in Aden, explained that the mines, shells, and ammunition disposed of were collected by his team from various villages and areas in Abyan, Lahj, and Aden throughout the month of September.
In this context, Qassem said that the mines destroyed in the Dufs area posed significant hazards for residents in their farms, sheep pastures, roads, and markets.
These explosive items were collected in response to reports from local civilians and government agencies.
He also noted that the bulk demolition process was conducted at a site that adheres to international standards for disposing of mines, improvised explosive devices, and other remnants of war.
Wadi Dufs was chosen specifically because it is located far from residential areas, pastures, and farms.
