Project Masam has announced that its demining teams have now located and destroyed 521,734 explosive devices across Yemen’s liberated areas since operations began in June 2018.

The cumulative total includes 6,969 anti-personnel mines, 147,849 anti-tank mines, 358,604 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO), and 8,312 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Clearance operations have made more than 72,413,604 square metres of land safe for civilian use.

Since the conflict escalated in 2014 between Yemen’s pro-government forces and Houthi militias, large areas of the country have been contaminated with landmines, UXO, and other explosive remnants of war. Strategic regions remain severely affected, with estimates suggesting that Houthi forces have planted between one and two million mines nationwide.

During the most recent reporting week (25-31 October 2025), Project Masam teams removed 1,095 explosive devices, including 22 anti-personnel mines, 195 anti-tank mines, 853 UXO, and 25 IEDs. Over this period, clearance operations covered 401,265 square metres of land.

Project Masam continues to prioritise the clearance of civilian areas, including villages, roads, schools, farmland, and key infrastructure, to enable safe movement for families and humanitarian workers.

It is estimated that up to five million Yemenis have been displaced since the start of the war, many forced from their homes by landmine contamination. Seasonal sand and dust storms continue to complicate clearance operations by reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidental encounters with hidden mines.

Project Masam remains committed to protecting civilian lives and supporting Yemen’s recovery through humanitarian mine action.
