His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, has expressed his sincere appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for extending Project Masam for an additional year. The renewed commitment, backed by a budget exceeding $52 million, reaffirms the Kingdom’s ongoing dedication to humanitarian efforts in Yemen.

Since its launch in mid-2018 under the direction of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), Project Masam has played a critical role in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance across Yemen. To date, the project has successfully removed nearly 500,000 explosive devices and has helped reclaim over 67 million square metres of land, making it safe once again for civilians.

In an official statement published on Friday (30 May), President Al-Alimi hailed the initiative as a powerful symbol of solidarity and compassion.

He stated: “This great humanitarian effort by our brothers in the Kingdom, through the Masam project, which has so far removed nearly 500,000 landmines and various explosive devices, embodies a noble fraternal commitment to Yemen and its people, and contributes to alleviating the suffering caused by the war ignited by the Iranian-backed terrorist Houthi militias.”

Project Masam operates with a coordinated team of international experts and trained Yemeni deminers, working together to address the widespread threat of landmines planted by Houthi militias. These indiscriminate weapons have inflicted immense harm on communities, disproportionately affecting women, children, and other vulnerable populations.

Trough Managing Director Ousama Algosaibi, the leadership of Project Masam has also reaffirmed its dedication to the mission, recognising the importance of continued support from Saudi Arabia and close cooperation with Yemeni authorities. Our progress to date reflects a joint determination to restore safety, stability, and hope in mine-affected areas throughout Yemen.

As we enter our eighth year, this extension stands as a testament to the shared vision of a safer future for Yemen – free from the devastating legacy of landmines.
