One of Masam’s demining teams has secured a number of schools located in Yemen’s western Mawza district.

Mawza is located in Taiz Governorate, one of Yemen’s heavily contaminated areas which have seen the majority of people injured or killed by explosive remnants of war (ERW), according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Masam’s Team 23 announced it secured schools in the previously heavily mine district on November 9.

The schools were thoroughly surveyed in search for any suspicious explosive item that may have threatened the lives of students and educational staff.

Leader of Team 23, Engineer Abdo Ibrahim, said his team’s goal was to restore security and stability to these vital educational facilities, so that schools are able to welcome students and staff again.

Along with schools, Masam prioritises vital facilities such as water supplies (wells), homes, farms and roads, so that Yemenis’ lives can return to normal without the threat of Houthis’ indiscriminately planted landmines.

This comes as Team 23 also announced it had successfully secured the water wells in Al-Safalia in Mawza district, allowing for the return of civilians including farmers, who are now able to practice their agricultural activities safely.
