Masam’s Aden and Marib teams clear and destroy 2,943 explosive items in a week

Project Masam teams have located, cleared or destroyed 2,943 landmines and unexploded ordnance in the last week across Yemen.

Operating since mid-2018, Masam currently has 32 teams working in liberated areas across the country and conducts humanitarian clearance in accordance with priorities set by the Yemeni National Authority.

Teams operating out of Masam’s Marib headquarters were clearing anti-tank mines, anti-personnel mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the governorates of Marib, Al Jawf, Shabwah, Al Hodeydah and Taiz.

The West Coast Teams operating out of Masam’s Aden headquarters, meanwhile, carried out clearance activities in Taiz, Al Hodeydah, Aden and Al Dalea.

Over the last week (20-27 May 2022), Masam teams cleared a total of 2,943 explosive items including 159 anti-personnel landmines, 325 anti-tank landmines, 2,447 UXO and 12 IEDs, effectively clearing a total of 319,115sqm.

Since mid-2018, 342,374 explosive threats have been cleared from 33,980,530sqm of Yemeni liberated land has been cleared. This included 5,219 anti-personnel mines, 126,778 anti-tank mines, 203,005 UXO and 7,372 IEDs.

This week, Masam announced a new landmark in Yemen as it cleared its 5,000th anti-personnel landmine.
