Masam’s Aden and Marib teams clear and destroy 1,423 explosive items in a week

Project Masam teams have located, cleared or destroyed 1,423 landmines and unexploded ordnance in the last week across Yemen.

Operating since mid-2018, Masam currently has 32 teams working in liberated areas across the country and conducts humanitarian clearance in accordance with priorities set by the Yemeni National Authority.

Teams operating out of Masam’s Marib headquarters were clearing anti-tank mines, anti-personnel mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the governorates of Marib, Al Jawf, Shabwah, Al Hodeydah and Taiz.

The West Coast Teams operating out of Masam’s Aden headquarters, meanwhile, carried out clearance activities in Taiz, Al Hodeydah, Aden and Al Dalea.

Over the last week (11-17 June 2022), Masam teams cleared a total of 1,423 explosive items including 19 anti-personnel landmines, 316 anti-tank landmines, 1,087 UXO and one IED, effectively clearing a total of 288,926sqm.

Since mid-2018, 346,570 explosive threats have been cleared from 35,051,834sqm of Yemeni liberated land has been cleared. This included 5,328 anti-personnel mines, 128,015 anti-tank mines, 205,850 UXO and 7,377 IEDs.

Last month, Masam announced a new landmark in Yemen as it cleared its 5,000th anti-personnel landmine.
