Masam’s Aden and Marib teams clear and destroy 1,201 explosive items in a week

Project Masam teams have located, cleared or destroyed 1,201 landmines and unexploded ordnance in the last week across Yemen.

Operating since mid-2018, Masam currently has 32 teams working in liberated areas across the country and conducts humanitarian clearance in accordance with priorities set by the Yemeni National Authority.

Teams operating out of Masam’s Marib headquarters were clearing anti-tank mines, anti-personnel mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the governorates of Marib, Al Jawf, Shabwah, Al Hodeydah and Taiz.

Team 15 currently deployed in Shabwah, Aeen, Shogat Alkhiam cleared 69 anti-tank mines this week. 

The West Coast Teams operating out of Masam’s Aden headquarters, meanwhile, carried out clearance activities in Taiz, Al Hodeydah, Aden and Al Dalea.

Over the last week (7-13 May 2022), Masam teams cleared a total of 1,201 explosive items including 35 anti-personnel landmines, 649 anti-tank landmines, 507 UXO and 10 IEDs, effectively clearing a total of 237,481sqm.

Since mid-2018, 338,092 explosive threats have been cleared from 33,193,578sqm of Yemeni liberated land has been cleared. This included 4,995 anti-personnel mines, 125,876 anti-tank mines, 199,866 UXO and 7,355 IEDs.
