On the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, Project Masam has launched an awareness campaign on the dangers of landmines in the governorates of Taiz and Marib.
Within the framework of this campaign, Masam’s teams designed awareness banners containing warning instructions about the dangers of landmines and the importance of not touching them and reporting any suspicious objects or items. This is in addition to introducing the scale of human rights abuses committed by the Houthi militia against civilians with their indiscriminate use of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
This campaign, part of Project Masam’s emphasis on Mine Risk Education which strives to achieve behaviour change to mitigate the risk of explosive devices through creating awareness and education about the risks of landmines and other explosive items as well as safe behaviour, targeted the two governorates’ residential areas, marketplaces, and main streets.
Taiz and Marib are some of the most landmine contaminated regions in Yemen, according to local human rights organisations.
This Mine Risk Education campaign is carried out within the framework of several awareness activities implemented by Project Masam to increase the awareness of members of the public of the dangers of landmines and highlight the humanitarian efforts provided by the Masam engineering teams in several Yemeni governorates.
