Masam destroys 1,614 landmines, unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices

Project Masam has destroyed 1,614 landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on the western coast of Yemen.

The bulk demolition operation, the third thisweek, included 392 anti-tank mines, 189 UXO, 22 anti-personnel mines, 16 IEDs, 514 miscellaneous fuses, and 481 artillery rounds.

This demolition operation is the third since the beginning of the month, as Masam teams last week carried out two operations in Jabal Habashi in Taiz governorate destroying a total of 2,875 mines, UXOs, and IEDs.

Continuing demining operations

In a statement, Project Masam’s Managing Director Ousama Algosaibi said that the mines that were destroyed in the third demolition operation posed a direct threat to the lives and livelihoods of innocent civilians.

Project Masam’s demining teams continue their work to protect civilians and contribute to bringing life back to normal in all Yemeni villages as well as urban and agricultural areas in the liberated areas.

Algosaibi, announced that since the launch of the project until now, field teams have removed 402,258 mines, UXO, and IEDs.

Since the beginning of the project, teams have removed 248,842 UXOs and IEDs, he said. So far, teams have also cleared 139,423 anti-tank mines and 6,187 anti-personnel mines, he added.

Algosaibi said that Project Masam’s engineering teams have so far cleared 47,011,090 square meters of Yemeni territory that were laid with mines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs.
