Project Masam has concluded an advanced medical training programme aimed at strengthening the readiness and safety of its field paramedics operating in mine-contaminated areas across Marib, Shabwan, and Al-Jawf governorates, in Yemen.

Field paramedics play a vital role in Project Masam’s mine action operations, forming an integral part of every demining team deployed in the field. In line with strict safety protocols, no clearance activities are conducted without the presence of a trained emergency medical technician (EMT), ensuring immediate medical response capability in high-risk environments. This structure is essential to safeguarding deminers and maintaining operational continuity in mine-contaminated areas.

The latest month-long programme was implemented in Marib Governorate as part of the project’s ongoing efforts to enhance occupational safety and emergency preparedness for teams working in high-risk demining environments.

The training was conducted at Kara General Hospital and involved 16 field paramedics from Project Masam. Participants underwent intensive instruction for up to 12 hours per day, combining international medical expertise from Project Masam’s medical staff with the hospital’s local clinical experience.

The curriculum focused on rapid-response skills in critical care, operating room procedures, and emergency medical management in hazardous field conditions. The program significantly enhances the capacity of medical teams tasked with supporting engineering units during mine clearance operations.

During a visit marking the conclusion of the programme, Andrew Sean Wells, Deputy Director of Operations for Project Masam in Marib, accompanied by Romeo Paige, Head of the Medical Department at the Project Masam office in Marib, emphasised that continuous capacity-building for medical personnel is a central pillar of the project’s comprehensive safety strategy.

Wells also praised the effective cooperation with Kara General Hospital, highlighting the hospital’s vital role in the success of the specialised training program.

He concluded by noting that this initiative forms part of a series of annual training programs implemented by Project Masam, reaffirming the project’s commitment to applying the highest international standards of safety, medical preparedness, and emergency response throughout demining operations in Yemen.
