It is no secret that Iran is involved in causing chaos in the Yemeni territory in various ways, especially in a military context, by training, directing and supplying munitions and strategic counsel, sharing techniques used to camouflage and place landmines.
International expert Jonah Leff, the director of operations at Conflict Arms Research (CAR), confirmed Iran’s direct involvement in supplying Houthi militias with Iranian-made landmines that had not been in the possession of the Yemeni army before the war.
Leff also confirmed in a report entitled “Mines and IEDs Employed by Houthi Forces on Yemen’s West Coast” the importance of developing plans and maps for demining. Leff presented his report during a seminar held at the UN headquarters in New York regarding civilians involved in the Yemeni conflict, from the perspective of international humanitarian law.
The report provided an overview of landmines, naval mines and improvised explosive devices used by Houthi militias on the western coast of Yemen.
In the latest field survey of Yemen in July, all electronic fragments of remotely controlled IEDs, including sensors and transmitters used by the Houthi militia on the western coast were documented.
The report confirms that their design and deployment was consistent with the material previously documented, revealing Iran as the country of origin for these landmines, which had been manufactured in 2008.
The report also mentions that the types of landmines used by militias on the west coast were the same as landmines seized from ISIS in Aden.
