This morning, the Project Masam carried out a demolition operation involving 4,199 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and other explosive remnants of war in the Dofs area of Zinjibar District, in Yemen’s sourthern Abyan Governorate.
Demolition is essential because it guarantees that explosive items are destroyed beyond use, preventing repurposing and removing the danger they pose to civilians.
The operation was supervised and executed by Project Masam’s Special Task Team 1 as part of its ongoing efforts to clear Yemeni territory of landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and unexploded ordnance (UXO) that pose a serious threat to civilian lives.
In a statement, Project Masam’s media centre confirmed that the destroyed items included a range of munitions: 15 anti personnel mines, 5 anti tank mines, 102 assorted shells, three IEDs, 4,056 rounds of ammunition, 15 hand grenades, and three rockets.
The operation also included the destruction of large quantities of explosive remnants of war previously collected by Project Masam teams from the governorates of Aden, Lahj, and Abyan.
In a statement to Project Masam’s media office, Munther Ahmed Qasim, leader of Special Task Team 1, said that the operation was successfully conducted in a secure area away from residential communities and agricultural land. He added that the team adhered to international standards for demolition operations despite challenging conditions on the ground.
Qasim noted that the work of the Special Task Teams continues throughout the year due to the critical importance of these missions in protecting the lives of civilians. He affirmed the team’s commitment to continue operations until Yemeni territory is fully cleared of landmines.
Project Masam continues its humanitarian efforts across multiple Yemeni governorates affected by landmines and improvised explosive devices, with the aim of enabling a safe return to normal civilian life.
