Emergency response teams from Project Masam, the Saudi-funded humanitarian landmine clearance initiative in Yemen, carried out a demolition operation on Thursday in the city of Mukalla, Hadhramaut Governorate.
The operation was conducted in coordination with the Mukalla branch of the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center (YEMAC), during which 1,681 landmines and explosive remnants of war were safely destroyed.
The destroyed items included a range of munitions, among them nine M79 guided missiles, five 122 mm artillery shells, 18 shells (85 mm), 187 shells (30 mm), 16 mortar shells (81 mm), and 98 mortar shells (60 mm). Masam teams also destroyed 86 shells (40 mm), 12 anti-personnel mines, 12 mortar shells (82 mm), 262 shells (23 mm), three B-10 shells, 28 RPG rounds, and 17 hand grenades.
Additional items destroyed during the operation included 30 anti-tank mine fuses, 107 Katyusha rocket fuses, and 791 rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition.
According to YEMAC, this demolition represents the fifth such operation carried out in Mukalla since mid-January.
The centre emphasised that Project Masam continues its humanitarian mission to clear landmines, improvised explosive devices, and unexploded ordnance across Yemen, helping to make affected areas safer for civilians.
With this latest operation, the total number of mines, improvised explosive devices, and unexploded ordnance destroyed by Masam teams in Mukalla since January 17 has reached 11,487 items.
