Project Masam has carried out its third bulk demolition operation in the city of Mukalla, in Yemen’s Hadhramaut Governorate, safely destroying 1,531 landmines and explosive remnants of war.
The operation was implemented as part of the project’s ongoing humanitarian mine action activities aimed at reducing explosive threats and protecting civilian lives.
According to Project Masam, the materials destroyed during the operation included:
- Ten anti-tank mines
- Six anti-personnel mines
- Four guided missiles (N72)
- 23 82mm mortar rounds
- 183 37mm shells
- 150 23mm shells
- 15 hand grenades
- 720 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition
- 420 rounds of 14.7mm ammunition
The wide range of munitions reflects the scale and complexity of explosive contamination remaining from past fighting, with items varying significantly in type, calibre, and level of risk.
The demolition was conducted by the project’s Special Task Teams in coordination with the Mukalla branch of the Executive Centre for Mine Action (YEMAC). The operation formed part of continued efforts to clear the city of all forms of explosive contamination and enhance safety across residential areas, civilian infrastructure, and key access routes.
With this latest operation, the total number of mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and unexploded ordnance destroyed by Project Masam teams in Mukalla since 17 January, has reached 7,921.
Project Masam reaffirmed its commitment to continuing clearance and disposal operations in coordination with national partners to reduce risks to civilians and support the restoration of safe daily life across affected communities.
