In its latest session, the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), has praised the efforts of Project Masam in Yemen.

The Ministerial Council of the GCC held its 161th session on Sunday 9 June 2024, in Doha, Qatar, under the chairmanship of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar.

Over the course of six years of humanitarian landmine clearance operations in Yemen, Project Masam’s work has received commendation from the GCC, which on several occasions expressed its appreciation for Project Masam’s efforts in the field of humanitarian landmine clearance work, as well as the sacrifices its staff have made in Yemen.

In June session, the GCC Ministerial Council commended the achievements of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief) and the efforts of the Saudi demining Project Masam in Yemen, which has so far removed 446,112 landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and cleared more than 57 million square metres of land in Yemen, which the Houthi militias indiscriminately planted with mines and IEDs, leading to the maining and killing of civilians, including children, women, and old people.

The GCC Ministerial Council also praised the development and vital projects and programmes implemented by the Saudi Programme for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen (SPDRY), which amounted to 229 development projects and initiatives in seven basic sectors, represented in education, health, water, energy, transport, agriculture, and fisheries, capacity building of government institutions, in addition to development programmes, financial support for the Yemeni government’s budget, and support for salaries, wages, operating expenses, and food security in Yemen.
