Project Masam deminers from Team 6 have conducted Battle Area Clearance in Ataq, a former conflict zone in Yemen’s southern Shabwa Governorate, clearing hundreds of unexploded deadly munition.

Over the last decades, this geotrategic oil-rich region has been a battleground between various entities including Yemeni government forces, local tribesmen, the Southern Transitional Council, AQAP and their affiliates, and Houthi militias.

Team 6 were called to investigate, locate and clear unexploded ordnance (UXO) in a destroyed ammunition bunker in Ataq, where they found large amounts of undetonated explosive ordnance that innocent civilians might stumble on.

Last week alone (26 June to 2 July), Masam teams cleared 3,610sqm of liberated land in Ataq, effectively localising and destroying a staggering 39 anti-tank mines, 374 UXO and 1 improvised explosive device (IED).
