Ali Saleh Saeed al-Shaer, coordinator of the National Mine Action Program, reported that 73 citizens were injured, including 9 deaths from landmines and other explosive remnants of war planted by Houthi militias in six directorates of the Lahj Governorate. Of these, 63 victims required amputations.
In a statement to Al-Mashhad Al-Arabi, al-Shaer pointed out that these data and statistics were collected during the implementation of the second phase of the Mine Risk Education program in six directorates of the Lahj Governorate.
Al-Shaer stated that the 45-day landmine awareness and mine action programs were carried out in the directorates of Al Qabbaytah, Al Maqatirah, Al Musaymir, Ras Al-Ara, Al Mudaraba, Al Milah, and Tour Al Baha.
He also mentioned that 70 participants had been divided into 8 teams, to provide a message to the people in the affected directorates about the seriousness of landmines and other explosive remnants of war, and the potentially grievous consequences and damage they can cause to humans and animals, including the risk of permanent disability or death.
He pointed out that the groups targeted for such awareness programs were the ones most vulnerable to that kind of threat, especially those in remote areas – women, children, farmers, and the like – and and educating them regarding how to avoid the threat.
