Dr. Ammar Al-Sheikh, Director of the Prosthetics Center in Marib Governorate, has commended the vital role played by Project Masam in safeguarding Yemeni civilians.

The Prosthetics Centre, funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), provides a range of integrated services for those injured by landmines. These services include psychological and motor rehabilitation, prosthetic installation, and ongoing maintenance to ensure the long-term quality and effectiveness of the prosthetics.

During the visit of the centre’s delegation to Project Masam, Project Masam’s Deputy Managing Director Retief Horn announced that the project’s demining teams have successfully removed over 450,000 mines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), significantly contributing to saving the lives of thousands of Yemenis.

He noted that the demining teams’ ongoing efforts to remove landmines help reduce the number of people requiring artificial limbs. He also pointed out that mines planted by the Houthi militias have been modified to increase their lethality and debilitating impact.

Retief added that Project Masam is diligently working to protect civilian lives through awareness campaigns conducted by the project’s demining teams in mine-contaminated areas.

These campaigns, known as Explosive Ordnance Risk Education, aim to educate local communities about the dangers of landmines and how to avoid them while stressing the importance of reporting suspicious objects to ensure everyone’s safety.

At the end of the visit, Dr. Al-Sheikh emphasised the crucial role of Project Masam in supporting the Yemeni people. He praised the collaborative efforts that help alleviate the suffering of the injured and enhance their quality of life.
