A man of few words, Tawfiq Mohammad Abdallah Jalajel asked Project Masam to share his story \u2013 one sadly lived by many Yemenis survivors of landmine explosions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI entered my home and at the door, there was an explosion, and lost consciousness. They planted mines everywhere,\u201d Tawfiq said, as he condemned the Houthi militias\u2019 use of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against civilians. Surgeons had to amputate both of Tawfiq\u2019s legs as a result of the blast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy life is not like before, I feel regret and sorrow that I can\u2019t walk or move. I wish I could walk and move like before. Now, I can\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2021 human rights report<\/a> found that at least 5,026 civilians have been killed or gravely wounded in 17 Governorates in Yemen between 2014 and 2021 as a result of explosion of mines and IEDs planted by the Houthi armed group, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to underreporting, the number of fatalities could be much higher than the deaths recorded by the human rights groups, who authored the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prevent new landmine-related injuries and deaths, Project Masam has located, removed and destroyed\u00a0a third of a million explosive items\u00a0across Yemen since mid-2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
