He used to grow grains, melons, sesame and fodder for livestock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cee0\">Then he was displaced by the conflict. When his area was liberated, he was finally able to return home, to his land. What he found was an area littered with landmines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2ca5\">Since the conflict between Yemen\u2019s pro-government forces and Houthi militias escalated in 2014, liberated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/project-masam-secures-30-of-%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8bdhubab-directorate-in-taiz-governorate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategic areas<\/a>&nbsp;have been left cluttered with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/18298-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;anti-personnel mines<\/a>&nbsp;and anti-tank mines, along with unexploded explosive remnants of war (ERW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ae11\">\u201cSince we came back [from displacement], we couldn\u2019t plant and we didn\u2019t know where to walk and where to plant until part of the farm had been cleared,\u201d Ali Salem, a father who relied on subsistence-level farming, explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-500x281.png 500w, https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-800x450.png 800w, https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw-1280x720.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1_ItKw0xbD4IQKg8SoE27ZIw.png 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Yahya Ali Salem found his farm littered with landmines when he returned from displacement<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3ebb\">This is unfortunately the reality for many farmers across Yemen, a country where agriculture is the lifeblood of the economy and its culture. Indeed, before the conflict, the sector directly provided livelihoods for at least&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/yemen\/yemen-socio-economic-update-issue-64-september-2021-enar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">73.5 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of Yemeni households, according to the Yemeni government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f14c\">\u201cPlanting mines causes danger to humans, livestock and everything that moves on the ground, and there have been many accidents that have claimed human lives and animals, May God help us,\u201d Ali Salem added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5c80\">While the presence of landmines on farmland not only denies farmers access to their land, it also has a dramatic effect on farmers\u2019 physical ability to tend to their land once they are able to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f3d4\">Father of four, Mansour Ali Mastour, said he was happy when his area was liberated and the frontline shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8a2d\">\u201cWe were farmers, when we faced the problems [due to the violence] we were forced to leave our region. Now this region is safe, everything is fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cd1e\">One morning, he left his home to take care of his affairs and was surprised by a landmine explosion. He fell to the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"de14\">\u201cI have four children, I used to take care of them and work hard in the farm for them. Now, I am disabled. There is no problem if you can\u2019t move for a day or two.. But it is very hard if you are disabled for life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9fa8\">The farmer, who lost both his legs and whose arm was injured in the explosion, still lives at home where his family tends to him, and spends his days on a makeshift bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2754\">\u201cWhen they plant the mines in your farm, what are they targeting? The last time he walked on his land, a landmine exploded. He was severely injured, and forced in displacement. He lost his crops and livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7095\">\u201cI came to work in our farm near the riverbed. I was walking through it when a landmine exploded under me. With&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ceobs.org\/yemens-agriculture-in-distress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">257,000 hectares of cropland<\/a>&nbsp;is exhibiting signs of distress, approximately equivalent to the total cropland in Jordan or Lebanon, Yemen\u2019s food insecurity is growing at a rapid pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fb5f\">Abdou Hamdi\u2019s life was halted by a landmine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6990\">\u201cI was going to herd my sheep when a landmine exploded under me. My right leg was injured above my knee,\u201d Hamdi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"eac4\">\u201cI can\u2019t live a normal life. I became a disabled. I was going to my work and now I am just sitting. I have no source of living, I can\u2019t work, I can\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" his amputation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In every of these cases, Project Masam was called in to investigate the reports of potential minefields, and of accidents due to landmine explosions.<br>Member of Masam\u2019s Demining Team 24, Ahmed Hussein Ahmed, explained how his team was told to head to Al-Saidia Road in Hays Directorate in Hodaydah Governorate, after civilians complained about explosions.<br>\u201cWe have been working in this field for two days, and we discovered about 20 anti-tank mines, and work is still ongoing, as there is a density of mines next to the roads,\u201d the deminer explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"574\" can return to their villages from which they were displaced four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"96ac\">In Al-Khawkhah Directorate, Masam\u2019s Team 26 was also called after civilians reported a minefield on a farm in Mahout Subai\u2019 village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a91e\">\u201cWe cleared these mines that were planted by the Houthi group next to these farms and next to civilian\u2019s pastures,\u201d Sami Said, Leader of Team 26 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"573\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/yemen-off-the-scale-number-of-landmines-planted-not-seen-since-vietnam-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evolving landscape of the proliferation<\/a>&nbsp;and indiscriminate use of landmines \u2014 both anti-personnel and anti-tank \u2014 is stretching teams thin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3879\">\u201cWork is continuing at a high rate, as these areas are all agricultural areas, and the displaced residents are being returned to their homes and the roads leading to the farms are being cleared,\u201d Ali Hadi Rashid, Leader of Team 27 also operating in Hays area, Hodaydah Governorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"574\" Masam\u2019s teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5d57\">\u201cMasam teams come on a continuous basis to investigate the presence of mines beside conducting continuous land surveys. When any explosion occurs whether triggered by people or livestock, Masam teams start surveying the entire place,\u201d Ali Salem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"918f\">He added: \u201cMasam teams came, they examined the land and cleared mines from part of it, which made us able to plant again. Now, the situation is better, and we hope that the harvest will return as it was,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6dd8\">For Yemen to rebuild and for its largest sector to prosper again, every landmine intentionally planted on roads, schools and agricultural farms must be removed.
