Yemeni writer and journalist Adel Al-Ahmadi, head of the Nashwan Al-Himiri Center for Studies and Media, has described Project Masam as one of the country\u2019s most vital humanitarian initiatives, citing its critical role in protecting civilians and securing areas affected by conflict.<\/p>\n
After over a decades of conflict and a fragile, still-elusive peace process, Yemen remains heavily contaminated with Houthi landmines, posing a persistent threat to civilians and hindering recovery.<\/p>\n
During a field visit to the project\u2019s headquarters in Marib Governorate, Al-Ahmadi reviewed ongoing operations and observed the extensive efforts of field teams working to clear contaminated land and remove explosive threats.<\/p>\n
Although he has followed the project since its launch, he said that witnessing its scale firsthand – and learning of the sacrifices made, including the loss of team members in the line of duty – left a lasting impression. He described Project Masam as a genuinely “life-saving mission”.<\/p>\n
Al-Ahmadi noted that more than half a million mines have now been cleared, highlighting both the scale of contamination and the complexity of the task after years of war.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery mine removed is a life saved and a chance for a new beginning,\u201d he said, commenting.<\/p>\n
Al-Ahmadi, who has contributed to The New Arab,<\/em> also expressed appreciation for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\u2019s support, and commended the coordinated efforts of the project\u2019s field, administrative, and media teams in sustaining its progress.<\/p>\n Emphasising the scale of the challenge, Al-Ahmadi pointed out that Yemen remains among the most heavily mined countries in the world. He stressed that clearing the land will require a long-term commitment to ensure communities can live in safety.<\/p>\n Reflecting on his visit, he described the suffering of mine victims (particularly women and children who have lost limbs) as deeply distressing. He added that these experiences would strengthen efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of landmines and the importance of clearance work.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Sean Wells, Operations Manager of Project Masam in Marib, provided a detailed briefing on operational achievements.
