Project Masam’s demining Team 16 is continuing its mine clearance operations in the Usaylan district of Shabwah<\/a> Governorate. Since early June, the team has been surveying and clearing mine-contaminated Area No. 96 in the Bir Matash region.<\/p>\n

The conflict in Yemen has left many areas contaminated with landmines<\/a> and improvised explosive devices<\/a> (IEDs), particularly those planted by Houthi<\/a> forces during periods of active fighting. Shabwah Governorate, including the Usaylan district, saw repeated clashes and shifting frontlines, resulting in widespread mine contamination that continues to threaten civilians and hinder safe access to farmland, grazing areas, and water sources.<\/p>\n

Team leader Engineer Mubarak Ahmed Al-Adwar reported that the initial survey started at the Al-Asbi point and extended to the farthest border of the area. Four anti-tank mines have so far been located, dismantled, and destroyed in line with safety standards and operational procedures.<\/p>\n

Al-Adwar highlighted the need to secure Bir Matash, which civilians use daily to graze and water their livestock from the local well. Clearing the area is essential to protect lives and preserve livelihoods.<\/p>\n

He noted challenges facing the team, including limited public awareness of mine risks. Despite awareness campaigns, some individuals continue to drive through unsurveyed areas. Additional difficulties include the unconventional, random and clustered placement of mines and some devices buried as deep as one metre beneath sand dunes, complicating detection and removal.<\/p>\n

Al-Adwar confirmed that Project Masam’s deminers maintain high morale and determination to complete their mission. Their goal is to restore normal life to the area, protect residents and livestock, and continue clearance operations across affected governorates as part of Masam\u2019s mission to save lives and reduce civilian suffering, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
