Project Masam has announced that its demining teams have now located and destroyed a total of 504,295 explosive devices in Yemen\u2019s liberated areas since the project\u2019s launch in mid-2018.<\/p>\n
This total includes 6,821 anti-personnel mines, 146,784 anti-tank mines, 342,446 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO), and 8,244 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Clearance operations have covered over 68,147,451 square metres of land to date.<\/p>\n
Since the escalation of the conflict between Yemen\u2019s pro-government forces and Houthi militias in 2014, vast areas of the country have been heavily contaminated with landmines, UXO, and other remnants of war – particularly in strategic regions.<\/p>\n
During the most recent reporting week (28 June – 4 July 2025), Project Masam\u2019s deminers removed 1,559 explosive devices, including one\u00a0anti-personnel mine, 45 anti-tank mines, and 1,513 UXO, while clearing 176,179 square metres of land.<\/p>\n
This effort followed a similarly high-output week (21 – 27 June 2025), when teams cleared 222,566 square metres and removed 1,493 explosive items, including 14 anti-personnel mines, 27 anti-tank mines, 1,448 UXO, and four\u00a0IEDs.<\/p>\n
Project Masam continues to focus its humanitarian mission on clearing land in civilian areas (villages, roads, schools, and other infrastructure) ensuring safer movement for people and aid workers alike.<\/p>\n
It is estimated that up to five million Yemenis have been displaced since the start of the war, many driven from their homes by the presence of deadly landmines and unexploded ordnance.<\/p>\n
