{"id":21712,"date":"2025-02-18T10:43:01","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T10:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/?p=21712"},"modified":"2025-02-18T10:43:01","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T10:43:01","slug":"houthi-landmines-claim-4501-lives-and-injure-5083-yemeni-government-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/houthi-landmines-claim-4501-lives-and-injure-5083-yemeni-government-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Houthi landmines claim 4,501 lives and injure 5,083, Yemeni government claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Houthi landmines have killed and injured thousands of Yemenis since the beginning of the conflict, according to Yemen&#8217;s Minister of Legal Affairs and Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis, a Shia-Islamist group also known as Ansar Allah, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/un-experts-on-yemen-call-on-houthis-to-stop-the-indiscriminate-use-of-landmines-in-report\/\">been planting landmines<\/a> and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Yemen since 2014.<span class=\"pjBG2e\" data-cid=\"c890cce3-7c37-4210-8cf1-d3adc16c504e\"><span class=\"UV3uM\"> They currently control over one-third of Yemen&#8217;s territory, and are claimed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/every-day-new-mines-and-ieds-are-planted-in-yemen-as-houthis-continue-to-produce-them-project-masam-deputy-md\/\">continuing to plant mines<\/a> and IEDs in strategic areas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Minister Ahmed Arman claimed the internationally-recognised government reported 4,501 civilians had been killed and 5,083 injured by landmines since the war began a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics provided to Project Masam&#8217;s Media Office, Taiz governorate has seen the highest number of fatalities from Houthi mines, with 964 deaths, followed by Hudaydah with 835 deaths, Al-Jawf with 505, Al-Baydah with 409, and Marib with 400 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Taiz also leads in the number of injured victims, with 1,321, followed by Al-Jawf with 813, Marib with 778, Hudaydah with 586, and Al-Baydah with 330.<\/p>\n<p>Project Masam, which has been active since June 2018 in Yemen, has successfully removed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/project-masam-clears-481776-landmines-and-explosive-threats-in-yemen\/\">481,776 mines<\/a>, IEDs, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) from various regions across Yemen by mid-February 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This includes 6,726 anti-personnel mines, 146,090 anti-tank mines, 8,194 explosive devices, and 320,766 UXO.
