The Masam Landmine Clearance Project – Yemen has carried out a bulk demolition of a large quantity of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs) in the Al-Rayyan area of Khabb wa ash Sha’af District in Al-Jawf governorate, northeast of Yemen.<\/p>\n
Since April 2020, much of A-Jawf, a prominent hotbed of Houthi landmine contamination<\/a>, has been under Houthi control, except Khabb wa ash Sha’af, which is governed by the internationally-recognised government of Yemen.<\/p>\n In a statement, deminer Hussein Al-Aqili, head of the Survey team, said: “The explosive items destroyed were collected within six months by Project Masam [demining] Team 1.”<\/p>\n Al-Aqili emphasised that the bulk demolition operation was conducted successfully in compliance with the highest international standards. He also noted that the team will continue to conduct additional bulk demolition operations in the same area, as it continues to find and clear landmines and other unexploded remnants of war.<\/p>\n Landmines have injured<\/a> and killed hundreds of civilians<\/a> in Al-Jawf since the beginning of the war in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
