{"id":20800,"date":"2024-03-08T10:49:40","date_gmt":"2024-03-08T10:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/?p=20800"},"modified":"2024-03-08T10:49:40","modified_gmt":"2024-03-08T10:49:40","slug":"project-masam-welcomes-united-nations-group-of-eminent-experts-on-yemen-in-aden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/project-masam-welcomes-united-nations-group-of-eminent-experts-on-yemen-in-aden\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Masam welcomes United Nations Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen in Aden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday 6 March, Project Masam welcomed the United Nations Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen at the project&#8217;s headquarters in the de facto capital Aden.<\/p>\n<p>Project Masam&#8217;s demining experts shared information and research with the United Nations team, including:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The smuggling of explosives into Yemen<br \/>\n\u2022 Houthis manufacturing their own landmines<br \/>\n\u2022 Regional contamination<br \/>\n\u2022 Current developments<\/p>\n<p>The panel praised Project Masam&#8217;s Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) efforts and reiterated the importance of educating the Yemeni population about the dangers of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO).<\/p>\n<p>In December 2023, the UN experts found that \u201cmost [human rights] violations investigated by the Panel were attributed to the Houthis\u201d and called on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/un-experts-on-yemen-call-on-houthis-to-stop-the-indiscriminate-use-of-landmines-in-report\/\">Houthis to stop the indiscriminate use of landmines<\/a> and remove existing landmines from civilian areas under their control.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Human Rights Council established the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen in September 2017. The Panel was set up to i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/atf\/cf\/%7B65BFCF9B-6D27-4E9C-8CD3-CF6E4FF96FF9%7D\/S_2023_833.pdf\">nvestigate violations and abuses committed in Yemen<\/a> since the beginning of the conflict in September 2014, when Iran-backed Houthi rebels and pro-former president Ali Abdullah Saleh forces seized the then-capital Sanaa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday 6 March, Project Masam welcomed the United Nations Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen at the project&#8217;s headquarters in the de facto capital Aden.
