Project Masam has carried out the bulk demolition of 1,582 landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Bab al-Mandab, in Dhubab District in south Yemen.<\/p>\n

The destruction operation carried out by Project Masam’s Special Task force in the Bab al-Mandab area, on the western coast of Yemen, included 120 anti-tank mines, 110 unexploded projectiles, 10 camouflaged IEDs (improvised so called rockmines with passive infra-red activation), in addition to 1,335 fuses and various bullets, three anti-personnel mines, and four large rockets.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the Assistant Managing Director of Project Masam, Qasim Al-Dossary, confirmed that the demolition process was carried out following the international standards for the destruction of landmines and remnants of war, where a safe site away from residential areas is chosen, after coordination with the competent authorities.<\/p>\n

Al-Dossary pointed out that the landmines and IEDs that were destroyed today were planted in vital areas, such as villages, farms, roads, and schools, among many others, where they posed a direct threat to the lives of civilians, and killed many of them.<\/p>\n

He added that Project Masam teams work daily along the western coast of Yemen, to secure innocent civilians against mines and IEDs so that they can live safely in their areas.<\/p>\n

This bulk demolition operation, carried out this morning by the Special Task force, is the 191st operation carried out by the project since it began its work in Yemen in June 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n
