{"id":18636,"date":"2021-12-14T16:58:41","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T16:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/?p=18636"},"modified":"2021-12-14T16:58:41","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T16:58:41","slug":"reducing-the-suffering-caused-by-anti-personnel-mines-through-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/reducing-the-suffering-caused-by-anti-personnel-mines-through-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Reducing the suffering caused by anti-personnel mines through education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image source=&#8221;featured_image&#8221; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1524156224953{margin-bottom: 25px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1639500899626{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #b5b5b5 !important;border-radius: 15px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p id=\"ce3d\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As the children huddle on the rough ground and whisper to each other, a mine clearance expert starts distributing flyers with photos of deadly explosives.<\/p>\n<p id=\"321d\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">We are in Yemen\u2019s Taiz Governorate and Masam\u2019s Project Manager and Technical Advisor Loedie Voges is about to start a\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/set-to-kill-when-booby-trapped-landmines-become-lethal-legacy-in-yemen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Mine Risk Education<\/a>\u00a0(MRE) and awareness session for the village\u2019s schoolchildren in an\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/returning-displaced-civilians-to-their-homes-in-mocha-taiz-governorate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">area saturated with a variety of landmines<\/a>\u00a0and explosive remnants of war (ERW).<\/p>\n<p id=\"9cfd\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Since the conflict between Yemen\u2019s pro-government forces and Houthi militias escalated in 2014, liberated\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/project-masam-secures-30-of-%e2%80%8b%e2%80%8bdhubab-directorate-in-taiz-governorate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">strategic areas<\/a>\u00a0(such as the southwestern Governorate of Taiz which has been at the centre of some of the most intense fighting Yemen has seen since the conflict intensified) have been left littered with\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/18298-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Houthi anti-personnel mines<\/a>\u00a0and anti-tank mines, along with unexploded ERW.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a50e\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In Yemen \u2014 as well as in other severely mine-contaminated countries \u2014 a multi-tiered approach is necessary for humanitarian mine action to be effective. Mine clearance, or demining, itself is not enough.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2c1a\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Humanitarian mine clearance projects must carry out MRE, which the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) describes as activities which seek to reduce the risk of injury from landmines and ERW by raising awareness and promoting behavioural change, including public information dissemination, education and training, and community mine action liaison.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Child mine risk education\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"607b\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Back in Taiz and there is an eery silence as Voges starts his presentation \u2014 translated by one of\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@project.masam\/yemen-how-masam-interpreters-ensure-safe-humanitarian-demining-in-conflict-zones-dad48b55a70\" rel=\"noopener\">Masam\u2019s interpreters<\/a>\u00a0and supported by members of the local demining team operating in the area.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d120\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As the discussion goes on, Masam\u2019s experts inform the group of children of the danger of unexploded ordnance (UXO), landmines and other unidentified items. The children are taught how to react should they encounter these items.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8e28\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">During the session, the Technical Advisor also tells the village\u2019s youngsters about Masam\u2019s work on the ground and asks them to help Masam\u2019s demining teams by immediately informing the deminers if they stumble upon potential minefields, UXOs and other unidentified items.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4ae5\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe target groups like schools because children are one of the best informants you can get due to them playing everywhere. They see things adults normally miss, due to their curiosity,\u201d Voges explained after the session.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b57d\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe show them pictures of items found in Yemen as well as posters to stick on walls at schools, shops, markets etc\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"1ed6\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The key takeaways from today\u2019s session?\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@project.masam\/yemen-when-landmines-become-a-currency-7d7574646fa7\" rel=\"noopener\">Not to touch or move any item<\/a>, how to mark an item that has been found and who to contact at Masam.<\/p>\n<p id=\"382d\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe normally provide them with a contact number of the clearance teams working in the area in their vicinity, close to them,\u201d Voges said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"72e1\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cMRE is the tool to make the public aware and ensure they are part of making their country safe. We also target groups in areas we suspect to be Dangerous Areas because of the history of the area especially where there were previous conflicts taking place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"69de\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Masam also targets the Military, Police, and villagers through the village chiefs who organise the gathering of their people for MRE sessions.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong>Landmine reports and vigilance\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"f32d\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">MRE also serves another purpose. It helps to prevent the planting of new minefields.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2d1c\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cIt allows civilians to become more vigilant and watch out for any strangers [who may plant landmines] in their vicinity \u2014 which makes it difficult for the militias to infiltrate areas and plant landmines,\u201d Voges added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9ec1\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Masam is not alone in delivering MRE to Yemenis, and the efforts are paying off. Voges describes instances where local demining teams received reports of potential landmines and other EWR from locals who had previously received MRE.<\/p>\n<p id=\"41e5\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cYou must remember the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Halo Trust, The Development Initiative (TDI) who are also working in Yemen carry out MRE. It is one of the most important means for any mine clearance company or organisation when on a survey to obtain information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"9750\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As Yemen\u2019s battlegrounds continue to shift, and\u00a0<a class=\"au mu\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@project.masam\/clearing-homemade-and-sophisticated-ieds-in-yemen-to-keep-civilians-safe-b65817fd91c7\" rel=\"noopener\">Houthi militias retreat<\/a>\u00a0from certain areas, the need for MRE is more important than ever.<\/p>\n<p id=\"09e4\" class=\"ly lz kp ma b mb mc il md me mf io mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt ja fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThis process should proceed long after the war.
