Despite huge progress in demining made in recent years in Yemen,\u00a0there is still a lot of work to be done if landmines are to no longer represent a risk to civilians\u2019 health, safety and lives, the Undersecretary for Technical Affairs in Al\u00a0<\/span>Jawf<\/span>\u00a0Governorate has said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2015, Yemen\u2019s Houthi militia have and are still routinely employing landmines directly against civilians<\/a> \u2013 extensively and indiscriminately.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the past year, the Houthis planted thousands of mines in residential areas, populated areas, farms, public roads and secondary roads,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0Saleh Ali Jamala, Undersecretary for Technical Affairs in Al\u00a0<\/span>Jawf<\/span>\u00a0Governorate told Project Masam.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMany properties have been destroyed and the activities of many civilians, farmers, traders and travellers have been hampered, because their lives are in danger. Hundreds of children and women were victims of these landmines<\/a>, which caused many disabling injuries in these areas.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Crucial humanitarian clearance work\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since it first entered Yemen in mid-2018, Project Masam has located and destroyed 266,452 explosive devices, effectively clearing 25,168,541sqm of Yemeni liberated land.\u00a0These include 4,004 anti-personnel mines, 85,511 anti-tank mines, 6,081 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and\u00a0170,856 unexploded\u00a0<\/span>ordnance<\/span>\u00a0(UXO).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of Project Masam\u2019s contract renewal<\/a> for a fourth consecutive year, the Undersecretary said the extension \u201cis very important for the continuation of demining activities.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Project Masam currently has 32 teams working in liberated areas across the country and conducts humanitarian clearance in accordance with priorities set by the Yemeni National Authority. It currently has teams deployed in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Aden, Al-Jawf,\u00a0<\/span>Aldala\u2019a<\/span>, Al-<\/span>Hudaydah<\/span>, Marib, Shabwah and Taiz.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cProject Masam has made great efforts in the last year in clearing landmines, especially in liberated areas. But the Houthis are constantly and intensively planting [landmines in those] areas,\u201d he claimed. \u201cEfforts must be intensified in these areas, and work must be continuous.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
