World Refugee Day 2021: Project Masam’s commitment to IDPs and refugees

Displaced

Khalid Nagi Saeid, Ghadeer Abdallah, Fatima Mohammad Haidar, and Saliha Abdah and their families are just a fraction of the four million people who remain displaced by war and violence in Yemen today.

Landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and explosive remnants of war (UXO) continue to threaten the safe return of millions of IDPs and refugees in Yemen. Since the beginning of the Yemen conflict in 2014, five million people have been displaced.

On this World Refugee Day (20 June 2021), Project Masam honours the courage of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in Yemen and around the world and reiterates its commitment to ensure displaced villagers return to their homes, safely.

By clearing civilian areas and areas of immediate humanitarian priority, Saudi-funded Project Masam is preventing future tragedies and allowing for the safe movement of civilians and humanitarian goods and services, effectively creating resilience within communities affected by the threat of landmines and other explosive items.

Since mid-2018, Project Masam has cleared 23,580,649sqm of liberated Yemeni land, effectively removing and clearing 256,475 explosive items including 3,867 anti-personnel mines, 80,661 anti-tank mines, 165,907 unexploded remnants of war and 6,040 IEDs (as at 18 June 2021).
