In light of the significant humanitarian challenges facing Yemen, Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) programmes are essential for protecting lives and preventing civilian casualties.

As the prevalence of landmines remains high across several regions across the war-torn country, the Masam Landmine Clearance Project – Yemen is making dedicated efforts to raise awareness among the most vulnerable groups.

In a statement, Retief Horn, Deputy Managing Director of Project Masam, reported that the demining teams have conducted intensive awareness campaigns in their operational areas between September 2023 and August 2024, reaching over 8,000 civilians across several Yemeni governorates.

The awareness campaigns reached 8,368 individuals, including:

  • 3,536 men
  • 1,194 women
  • 3,645 boys
  • 1,792 girls

Horn noted that these initiatives included educational lectures and the distribution of brochures and materials designed to educate civilians about the dangers of mines and how to avoid them.

The Deputy Managing Director emphasised that EORE programme are continuously expanding to reach more areas and individuals, furthering Project Masam’s commitment to enhancing community awareness on how to deal with mines that they may encounter.

Horn added that continuing these efforts is crucial for saving more lives and reducing injuries, especially given the significant challenges Yemen faces in this regard.
